Rising Enfield entrepreneurs were among those receiving official recognition for making the leap from unemployment to self-employment at an event held by Business Link in London and JobCentre Plus (JCP) to praise London's business start-ups.
David Gibson was recognised for his work to launch Trent Park Outdoor Pursuits, an outdoor scheme to get Enfield's children and families reconnected with nature in Trent Park, whilst Dean Vale set up DV8 Creative Solutions offering marketing and web-design services. Both had lost their previous jobs and turned to Business Link in London for support and advice on getting their business start-ups off the ground.
The event also featured one of the city's most well-known entrepreneurs, Pimlico Plumbers' Charlie Mullins, who talked about his own experiences of starting out in business to an audience which included other long-term unemployed Londoners hoping to follow in his footsteps.
Charlie comments, "There are many hurdles to overcome when you start up in business but it's also one of the most rewarding things you can do. I hope that I've been able to inspire these budding entrepreneurs and that they've taken away some valuable advice that will help them on their way to becoming successful business people."
Stephen Walker, Project & Partnership Manager at Business Link in London adds, "We're pleased to have been able to support these Londoners in business ventures that will help them start a new chapter in their lives and make a positive contribution to the capital's economy. The event is our way of recognising their inspirational achievements so far and to wish them the best of luck for the future".
David plans to build classrooms and an outdoor pursuit's centre to offer free education and classes on nature, fishing and other activities relating to Trent Park, "I really have learned a lot and matured going through this process," he comments.
Dean adds, "There is a very potent fear factor, you worry that a few months down the line there could be no money coming in and with a mortgage to pay it's all down to you. But I'm a firm believer that whatever you put in comes back to you ."
