BT recruits UK's first super-fast broadband triallists in Muswell HIll

BT today announced that it was beginning the search in Muswell Hill for the first households and businesses in the UK to "test drive" its new super-fast broadband.

The "fibre to the cabinet" (FTTC) technology will be trialled this year here in Muswell Hill and in Whitchurch in Wales with download speeds of up to 40 Mbp/s possible.

BT Retail customers taking part in the trial will get free super-fast broadband until the end of January 2010.

Super-fast broadband delivers a more powerful internet connection with less disruption or loss of speed. It supports more online users, can run multiple bandwidth-hungry applications and improves the experience of services including high definition (HD) TV, gaming, file sharing, movies, cloud computing, flexible working, to help businesses better compete in the current climate.

For example, some members of a family could be watching different high definition (HD) movies while others were working on complex graphics, video projects or gaming. The technology will also offer improved upload speeds of up to 2Mbp/s.

If eligible,* BT Retail customers in Muswell Hill can take part in the trial from mid-August until the end of January 2010.

Emma Gilthorpe, BT director for London, said: ?This is a fantastic opportunity for Muswell Hill homes and businesses. Those taking part in these BT Retail trials will be pioneers for a whole new super-fast broadband service and all for free too.

"It is vital that the capital is at the heart of these UK trials and this community is at the forefront of one of the most important projects to take place in recent years.

"Now these trials will really be able to give us a full picture of the way that people will want to use the new service."

The recruitment campaign kicks off on Monday (June 29) with a mixture of poster and press advertisements followed by direct mail and door to door contact in the area.

BT Retail also plans a local super-fast broadband showcase allowing local people to ask questions about the technology and to see a range of home and business demonstrations and applications which the technology will enable.

The trials are part of BT Group?s first major phase of the UK's biggest ever investment programme in super-fast broadband, BT has pledged to spend £1.5 billion by 2012 to ensure 40 per cent of UK homes and businesses some 10 million premises can enjoy fibre-based super-fast broadband.
